Scapa 10 Year Old is a bright, fruit-led single malt from one of Scotland’s most remote distilleries. Scapa sits on the shore of Scapa Flow in Orkney, just outside Kirkwall, and has been making whisky there since 1885. It’s one of only two distilleries on the islands, and unlike its better-known neighbour it makes an unpeated spirit. That means no smoke, just a clean, sweet style shaped by the sea air and the island’s cool, steady climate.

Scapa owes its fruity character to an unusual piece of kit: a Lomond wash still. This squat, barrel-shaped still was a rare 1950s design, and Scapa is one of the few distilleries still running one. The new spirit comes off rich in tropical fruit and honey. Ten years in American oak adds soft vanilla and gentle spice, and bottling at 48% gives it more body and flavour than the average entry-level malt. For the price, it’s one of the most rewarding island whiskies on the shelf.

Who it’s for: Anyone who loves fruity, honeyed single malts but wants something a little off the beaten track. It’s a great choice if peaty island whiskies aren’t your thing, and an easy gift for someone exploring Scotch beyond the big names.

How to enjoy it: At 48% it rewards a splash of water, which opens up the tropical fruit and creamy vanilla. It also makes an excellent Highball with soda and a twist of orange peel, or a smooth after-dinner dram alongside a dessert.
